The National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu, Bhutan was built in 1974 in memory of His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It is one of the prominent landmarks in Thimphu. It was consecrated by Dudjom Jigdral Yeshe Dorje.

 

The Chorten (stupa) has become one of the most visited landmarks in Thimphu. While old and young locals visit to circumambulate and pray, tourists and outsiders visit as part of their sightseeing itineraries.

 

For many part of the day, many people would be seen at the Chorten. Among them were an old man and woman seated by the large prayer wheels. They would come as early as 8:30AM and spend whole day praying and chanting mantras.

 

Towards North-east corner, statue of a standing Dakini symbolically offers water.

 

The Chorten face east. It was brightly lit by the morning sun rays. In recent past years, it underwent extensive renovation. It has a well maintained lush green lawns. It also has facilities to host various religious events at the venue.

 

It is one of the exemplary monuments which shows seamless cohesion of modern and traditional architectural designs. It continues to serve as one of the central places of refuge for old and young devotees and a place of wonder to the outsiders.
